Taos High School has introduced Manchester Wardrobe this school year, a free clothing bank within the school with the focus of providing help to all students. Originally named Tiger Threads, the thrift store's original idea was produced for a senior project by student Jamie Manchester Jones. The store has recently been absorbed into Taos Community Schools so that it can continue after Jones graduates in May.
Manchester Wardrobe accepts donations from the school, staff, students, parents, and community members to keep their clothing and accessory items accessible and adequate. The generous contributions have allowed Manchester Wardrobe to accept all types of clothing, catering to the diverse needs of the students.
Recently, the thrift store has been seeking professional clothing donations and has received an overwhelming response. The community has provided items such as three-piece suits, dresses and other formal attire, enabling students to dress their best for special occasions.
Students are encouraged to visit Manchester Wardrobe, where they can select clothing that suits their personal style and preferences. The store aims to create a safe and inclusive space for students to access the items they need without feeling stigmatized.
Manchester Wardrobe has also been receiving “in-store” help from fellow students, who play a pivotal role in the operation of the space on a daily basis. Volunteers help sort and organize the donated clothing, while the life skills class takes charge in washing and folding the garments, helping teach valuable lessons in independence and self-care.
As Manchester Wardrobe continues to grow, it serves as an example of how a small initiative can have a profound impact on the lives of students. Through the provision of clothing and personal hygiene items, the thrift store not only focuses to meet the basic needs of students who may have less accessibility to it, but also hopes to instill a sense of pride and self-worth in the students it serves.
