Run for or held elected office before? NM State Senator representing District 8 since 1991, re-elected in 2020; former mayor of Santa Rosa.
Reason for candidacy and top priorities:
Senator Pete Campos has represented NM's 8th District for 33 years, making him the state's senior ranking senator. From 1986 to 1990, when he was first elected to office, Campos was mayor of Santa Rosa, the county seat for Guadalupe County.
Campos is a standing member of the Senate Finance Committee, and is a member of the Legislative Finance Committee, Revenue Stabilization & Tax Policy Committee, Water & Natural Resources Committee, and Legislative Council Special Advisory Council.
"I have spent my life serving others, something I thoroughly love," Campos said. "I would like to continue as a servidor de la gente in the position as State Senator."
If re-elected, Campos said he would focus on strengthening his district, with an emphasis on healthcare, education, capital outlay and infrastructure projects, "a clean environment and our economy."
"Improving these core areas will make us a flourishing and more vibrant place to call home," Campos said. "This will incentivize our youth to make a living and raise their families in state, become educated and skilled in their areas of interests, and significantly contribute to the current and ongoing vitality of our communities.
"I have spent my legislative career addressing individual constituent concerns, working alongside community leaders, and providing the resources to assist the underserved," he added. "I’ve done this steadfastly, successfully and wholeheartedly before and during the pandemic and Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fires and floods. Now, I’m sharing what I’ve learned and experienced to better life changing services for our families, neighbors, health care providers, teachers, veterans, skilled workers, small business owners, first responders, and communities overall.
"When I analyzed the resources we would have available a few years ago, I knew it was time to establish trust funds and use the interest from these funds to support our needs. This will provide us the economic stability necessary for a robust future."
Campos lives in Las Vegas.
