The first time I remember exploring an office building was in the early 90s. It was “Take Your Child to Work Day.” My visit featured a free vending machine (there is no greater magic) and stress-test simulations on my dad’s computer. As a knowledge worker, my dad spent the bulk of his professional life in a sea of fluorescently-lit cubicles. For many, this was the routine: commute each day to a physical place … often a truly less-than-aesthetically-pleasing place.
Is Remote Work Right for You?
Six questions to ask if you’re considering WFH.
March 09, 2023
Summary.
Studies have shown that younger workers have a “work-to-live” attitude — not the other way around — and prize employee benefits that support wellness and inclusivity. What if you’re among them and considering a remote role? Some introspection can help you figure out if working remotely would suit you. Ask yourself:
- What kinds of professions do you find truly interesting or fulfilling? If you find yourself leaning toward roles likely to be onsite (many medical professions, construction, childcare, or events management jobs, to name a few), that might be a clue that a remote role isn’t what you’d prefer at this stage.
- Where would you like to live? Unless a work-from-home job specifies that it is truly a work-from-anywhere arrangement, you’ll need to check with your organization’s HR team. Some companies may have more flexible work-from-anywhere policies, while others only hire in certain countries, regions, states, or provinces.
- What personal requirements do you have that may impact your work? List any circumstances that would require you to fit work around them, and will factor into the kind of job that’d work best for you.
- What daily routines bring you the most satisfaction? iI you prefer to be surrounded by familiar faces, going into an office may be a better fit than a remote role.
- How well can you manage yourself? Good communication and self-management skills are key for those who work from home.
